Urban Art Gallery in West Philadelphia

DSC_0652(Pictured Left to Right) Wasiu Ojuolape Jr. poses with Kalphonse Morris,Curator of Urban Art Gallery in West Philadelphia.

Philadelphia, PA.- The Urban Art Gallery is located on 262 S.52nd Street in Philadelphia. The gallery is a non-profit organization that is committed to providing Philadelphia youth with free multi-faceted arts and culture programs. In addition to featuring up rising artists like Wasui Ojuolape Jr artwork. Wasui is an self -taught artist who is inspired by graffiti art and the beauty of everyday life. The focal point of his art will capture you with familiar pop icons or the aesthetic of nature.

“No Attention Needed” This is how artist, Wasiu A. Ojuolape Jr., describes his artwork. He feels that his art speaks for itself. Wasiu describes his work as fun, extravagant, youthful and always evolving. He allows himself to create in the moment and let internal inspiration be his guide. It’s all about the creative flow and vibe. The message may sometimes be unclear but he always paints with a purpose. His style consist of using a range of colors, shapes, words, patterns pop icon and two signature characters the bear and robot. He shared that the characters interchangeably represent his state of mind.
As Wasiu got older he began to search for what made him happy. After his family moved to New Jersey he began teaching himself with “how to” drawing lessons online. Later, he became intrigued with graffiti and street art. Wasiu remembers practicing and having a sketch book filled with graffiti and carton drawings. This is when he got his inspiration for his brand name “Exotick”.
Wasiu’s decided to advance his knowledge of art by taking his first art class in high school. His joy of creating grew as he learned the basic techniques and history of art. To further is studies in art he enrolled at Rowan College in NJ. Wasiu completed a year and half of college but felt the classroom setting was not where he could find his inspiration. He left school with the intention of enhancing his own unique style. About two years later, he realized there were other basic art/design concepts he needed and re-enrolled to Rowan. Wasiu enjoys working with both acrylic and spray paint but prefers the later. He finds spray paint allows him more freedom to express his creativity.

In 2016 Wasiu Ojuolape, Jr. made a New Year’s Resolution that resulted in a productive year. He has sold over 20 original paintings and created a great foundation for his brand “ExoticK”. He adopted a mantra… strive for what I want and don’t compare because I am unique. He accredited this through his mother’s support of his talents. Wasiu’s future endeavor is to continue his education whether it is in a classroom or travelling; while enhancing his unique creative expression that many people have come to know and love with his art.
